Life Test:DC Locomotive Traction Motor

Overview

This project challenge was Automation of two Traction Motor Life-Test Rooms for the world’s leading manufacturer of DC Locomotives.
This test runs completely unattended. Inputs such as temperature, vibration, fire control system, etc. are continually monitored and shut down the system in the event of a problem. The system consisted of the combination of a Variable Speed Drive and several DC Generators. The system has the capability to change direction or function (motoring / generating) without operator seamlessly. Corrected Airflow is also precisely controlled as well as room ambient temperature. The second room is a combination AC / DC facility.

Unique Challenges

Since there are both AC / DC facilities the PLC software was made to run either type room. The room and motor cooling systems are integrated. The room air system is closed loop with a supply / return fan with outside mixing capability for ambient control. The room static pressure must be kept near zero since there to allow access doors to operate properly. The motor cooling air is fed by the room supply blower and exhausted into the room. The motor cooling air must corrected and precisely controlled for thermal testing.
